6 Misconceptions to Learn About Projection Mapping

| Updated on November 27, 2024

I’ve always been fascinated with projection mapping, and I’ve been part of this industry for quite a while. One thing that I noticed is that there are several misconceptions related to this technology. Have you heard any of those rumors?

This is an advanced form of art and in 2024 Matsumoto Castle was projected with digital art featuring Japan’s rich culture and heritage. This lasted for 3 months. It started in December 2023 and finally ended in February 2024.

On to our main topic, In this article, I’ll mention 6 misconceptions to learn about projection mapping. The reason is that people are not able to take full benefit of this because of the incorrect perceptions that have been spread, and I want to clear those.

1. Only for Large-Scale Displays

Many of you might’ve heard that projection mapping is exclusively done in large-scale places and events. But this is not entirely true. While its true potential is shown on a bigger stage, it is used in small areas as well.

It could instantly adapt to any size. The best thing is, that it will be as beautiful and eye-catching if it is done on a larger surface. So, if you were thinking that you won’t be able to avail it just out of lack of space, don’t be that way.

2. Requires Expensive, High-End Equipment

Another common misconception related to projection mapping is that it requires expensive, high-end equipment. I won’t deny that yes, high-end equipment will give you the best experience and result, but it is accessible to a wider audience and can easily fit into your budget.

There are different cost-efficient equipment, operating packages, and projectors that can put on a solid show. But how is this possible? The reason is that since our technology is evolving, the cost of entry is actively decreasing.

3. Too Complex to Learn.

People are in this delusion that projection mapping is complex and can’t be learned by everyone. We are humans who are considered to be the smartest creatures on this planet. We can do anything if we put our mind and soul into it.

You can go online and choose different courses, software, and tutorials that will help you master the basics. Once that’s cleared start doing smaller projections and when you feel confident enough in your skills take a step further.

Get advanced learning material and increase the area. But one step at a time, you can’t rush the process. Don’t jump onto buying the most high-cost tools and stuff, it would be of new use if you don’t even know the basics.

4. Only Works with Static Surfaces.

Many believe projection mapping can simply be done on a still surface. This is just false because its dynamic nature allows it to be applied on moving or shape-changing surfaces as well.

It could do its work on thighs like a moving car, a dancer, or even a waterfall. How cool is that? This is possible in light of the specialized techniques and computer programs that can adjust the beam of the projector to follow a moving object.

The projection mapping market is also increasing each year. So far, in 2024, it is valued at $3.83 billion. But in the next 4 years, the valuation will double. Take a look at the graph below.

5. All About Visual Effects, Not Practical Uses

Yes, I agree that projection mapping is generally used for creating stunning illustrations for art galleries and functions, but that doesn’t mean it’s all about the visuals, and it doesn’t have any practical use.

This technology is often used for educational purposes, architectural design, and advertising. It can be used in many different ways, it’s up to you how you want to utilize its capabilities.

6. Can Only Be Done with Expensive Software

Again, no denying that extravagant software is used for big projects and displays, but that doesn’t mean projection mapping can be done with a low budget. There is a good deal of programming to choose from. This includes free, affordable, and costly goods.

A few examples include Blender and Processing. You can use them to create amazing projections and impress anyone.
