On Sunday, August 24, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested by French police at Le Bourget airport. Pavel Durov was accused of allowing activities to be violated. The litany of complaints includes child pornography and drug trafficking.
Moreover, the French government banned Durov from leaving the country and reported to the police station twice a week. He was released on a bail of 5 million euros as charges. The government released him after four days of questioning.
According to the French prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, “dissemination in an organised group of images of minors in child pornography,” the telegram is accused of not sharing information and documents with the government for investment purposes. He also added that Telegram provides cryptographic information and a platform for criminals.
The prosecutor continued and said, “The first preliminary charge against him was for “complicity in managing an online platform to allow illicit transactions by an organized group,”
“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform,” Telegram’s post after the arrest said. “Almost a billion users globally use Telegram as a means of communication and as a source of vital information. We’re awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation. Telegram is with you all.”
However, the agency news AP claims that the charges are not immediately forced on anyone. This alleged case needs more time for further investigation.
Apart from this, a Standard University researcher, David Theil also found that Telegram is less secure in terms of privacy in comparison to other messaging apps.
