If you’ve been hanging out on Bluesky, the open-source social media service that started as a Twitter brainchild, Bluesky has finally rolled out direct messaging (DM) capabilities. After more than a year of onboarding new users, Bluesky now lets you slide into those DMs. So no matter if you’re on the app or the website, you can now message your friends directly.
The default setting allows you to receive messages from people you follow, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can tweak it to get messages from “everyone” or, if you’re more of a private person, from “no one.”
For now, Bluesky DMs are pretty straightforward—just person-to-person text chats. But hold on to your hats, because the company promises that media sharing, group chats, and end-to-end encryption are on the horizon.
And while Bluesky is all about keeping things safe, they do mention that they might need to peek into your messages in rare cases. Think of situations like investigating spam or harassment.
But don’t worry, this is only when absolutely necessary, and any access is tightly controlled and tracked internally. So, maybe hold off on sharing your deepest secrets for now. Overall, this new DM feature is a big win for Bluesky users looking to connect and chat more privately.
