Bluesky verification and impersonation measures

A significant number of users have been flocking to Bluesky with a lot of shifting from Elon Musk’s X, which was earlier referred to as Twitter. While this surge in new users is quite encouraging for the Bluesky team, it also presents some challenges, especially concerning verification and impersonation.

Bluesky has announced that its intention is to increase efforts to make sure that accounts are operated by claimed individuals, as per reports, the team is working behind the scenes to provide verification of organizations and high-profile individuals hence reducing the risk of deception.

As social networks expand, issues related to impersonation and verification increase and become more critical. For example, if a post is shared by the President of the United States, it is essential to confirm that the post comes from the President and not from an impersonator.

Bluesky has mentioned that all impersonation and handle-squatting accounts will be removed from the platform and this company is increasing the size of the moderation team to a larger extent to assist in identifying users who present themselves as someone else and may potentially defraud others.

Bluesky has given permission to parody, fan and satire accounts on the platform but with the condition, it is necessary for them to mention it in their account handle as well as bio. However, identity manipulation with the intention to mislaid other users is strictly prohibited.

Right now details about the verification process of Bluesky remain limited, including whether the verified users will get a badge or there will be some other method for verification, more updates about the same are expected to be out soon.

Bluesky team is actively looking for feedback on effective verification strategies and at present, the users can partially verify their accounts by linking a custom domain name, although this option may not be suitable for everybody.
