Google is rolling out a new disclosure to enhance transparency in its Pixel images or photos that are edited with AI-generative tools.

John Fisher, Engineering Director at Google Photos and Google One said in a blog post:

“Photos edited with tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser and Zoom Enhance already include metadata based on technical standards from The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) to indicate that they’ve been edited using generative AI.”

He added, “Now we’re taking it a step further, making this information visible alongside information like the file name, location and backup status in the Photos app.”

Furthermore, Google Photos would marked “Edited with AI” visible when you scroll down the details section of the photo. Google said that it will distinguish which elements or objects edited photos contain from AI tools.

Google announced the new disclosure just after two months of the Pixel 9 series. This latest smartphone is embedded with AI photo editing tools, so the company is responsive to introducing the tool that compares synthetic photos and original photos.

Additionally, Pixel’s Best Take and Add Me features that couldn’t edit images with AI will now indicate that the photos are edited in the metadata. But this feature is not seen in the details section.

However, the new disclosure and metadata are not obvious when images are edited via AI-generative tools. Most people view and scroll through the images without going into depth of the photos. Google needs to introduce visible watermarks on AI  images that are easily readable by human eyes.
