Google is testing the ‘Desktop Window’ feature for Android tablets to resize different apps and rearrange them on the screen for multitasking. This function is already available on desktops, but on tablets, a fixed screen size is offered to the users.
This is going to change very soon, with Google right now offering the developer’s preview for a few apps that support it. In the new feature, users will be able to resize and reposition the apps conveniently without having to fully minimize or close the app.
The taskbar at the bottom of the screen will show the running apps that can be reopened anytime.
Desktop Windowing on Android Tablets
The ‘Desktop Window’ feature will be simple to use by pressing and holding the window handle of the app screen. Or on a wired keyboard, choose the shortcut key – Windows or Command + Ctrl + Down to activate Desktop mode on your tablet. If you want to exit the mode, close all the running apps or drag it from the window handle to the top of the screen.
At the moment, not all apps can be resized and some are locked in portrait orientation. Therefore, in the new ‘Desktop Window’ feature, Google plans to scale the UI of non-resizable applications while maintaining their aspect ratio.
Once this new feature is added to the Android tablets, users will have more control over the app layout and manage everyday work much more smoothly. For now, the developer’s preview is available in the latest Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2 for Pixel Tablets.
So, stay tuned for the latest update on the ‘Desktop Window’ feature for Android tablets to be launched very soon.
