HDMI 2 2 to be out next month

The next iteration of HDMI technology is HDMI 2.2 which could be just weeks away from its debut. An email from the HDMI Forum has been circulated to several media outlets including Engadget over the weekend. It reveals that a new HDMI specification is all set to be unveiled on Monday, January 6 in Las Vegas which is just ahead of CES 2025

While specifics are still under wraps however the announcement hints that this new standard will support a broader array of higher resolutions and refresh rates which is accompanied by a brand-new HDMI cable.

It has been seven years since HDMI 2.1 made its debut with the brand new update which is version 2.1b, rolling out in 2023 to accommodate bandwidths reaching up to 48Gbps and resolutions soaring to 10k.

The upcoming specification promises even greater bandwidth capabilities which have been indicated in the email. Although the details remain sparse, the team will be on-site at CES to keep the users informed about the same and other exciting announcements as they unfold.

As of now, the HDMI forum has yet to disclose the precise specifications for HDMI 2.2 however, with the announcement looming, users might not have to wait much longer. Notably, this new HDMI standard is expected to coincide with the unveiling of next-generation graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA.

For the users who are unaware of the specifications, both GPU manufacturers are anticipated to launch their new RTX 50 series as well as RX 8000 series graphics cards. These cards will be released in 2025 in January during the CES event and it clearly states that the users can find these cutting-edge GPUs equipped with the HDMI 2.2 standard which is considered that it comes in addition to the Display Port 2.1 standard.
