iOS 18.2 marks a major update for users featuring notable enhancements in Apple Intelligence and a major renovation of the Mail app below all the new features. The redesigned Mail applications resemble  Messages more than ever. Upon launching the Mail app in iOS 18.2, the changes are immediately noticeable. While the mailbox screen retains its traditional look accessing an inbox reveals substantial alterations.

Visually, Apple now prioritizes sending contact photos within your inbox, previously a text-heavy display email now incorporates colour and images, essentially, the emails resemble threads found in the Messages app with a contact image positioned on the left side.

This update aligns with the new branded mail features of Apple aimed at businesses and companies can now upload their logo to use as the contact image in Mail, the Phone app and the Apple Pay interface during contactless transactions. If a business has not completed this, the icons from Apple Maps will be used instead.

The introduction of categories brings significant changes to inbox management, beyond the addition of contact photos, iOS 18.2 introduces a fundamental shift in inbox organization. The Apple Mail app now automatically categorizes your inbox into four sections, the titles and brief explanations are:

  • Transactions – It will keep an eye on orders such as notifications for deliveries.
  • Primary – Users can access the most relevant messages here and manage everything else
  • Promotions – Find updates from familiar businesses and organizations
  • Updates – Maintain awareness with a designated area for all things like alerts, newsletters, etc

Emails are sorted on arrival, and each category is divided into two segments such as New Messages and Older Messages. Users can also use the digest option to streamline message views, all the new categories can make inboxes more organized making it easier for users to access important emails.
