The International Olympic Committee (IOC) conveyed their deepest apologies to South Korea after a rare mismanagement at the 2024 Olympic opening ceremony in Paris.
It’s hard to believe but the organizers at the opening ceremony introduced the South Korean team as the “Democratic People’s Republic of Korea“—the official name of North Korea.
This incident not only shocked the spectators, but its tremors can be felt all the way to South Korea, as the Korean government has demanded strict action from the IOC.
Meanwhile, the IOC has promised a full investigation into the incident and has pledged to take steps to prevent similar errors in the future.
In 1945, the two countries settled on separation, and ever since they’ve been moving along two entirely different roads. It’s been more than 70 years since the Korean War, so exchanging names, especially in a period where both nations are facing hostilities from each other, raises many eyebrows at the level of management in the 2024 Olympics.
