OpenAI took a step forward on Thursday with its viral chatbot, which is now capable of working as a search engine, introducing the ChatGPT search. Competing against leading search engines like Google, Microsoft, Bing, and Perplexity, the AI giant plans to make its place among them.

ChatGPT has already marked its reputation as one of the leading AI chatbots, and now the introduction of search GPT might turn it into more than just a chatbot. This search engine feature allows users to access relevant, real-time search results without leaving the chat interface. It has a partnership with news and data providers to offer up-to-the-minute sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather, and more.

Recently, Microsoft has invested close to $14 billion in OpenAI, yet this new search product from the company directly competes with Microsoft’s AI and search tools, such as Copilot and Bing.

The OpenAI’s engineering VP, Srinivas Narayanan, in a Reddit post, was able to answer upon asking whether ChatGPT was using the Bing search engine behind the scenes, to which he simply stated, “We use a set of services and Bing is an important one.”

Now, according to OpenAI, this search GPT will allow users to search more naturally and intuitively. Searching in a chatbot would be like browsing in more of a conversational way.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said Thursday during the Reddit AMA, “I find it to be a way faster/easier way to get the information I’m looking for.”

“I think we’ll see this, especially for queries that require more complex research. I also look forward to a future where a search query can dynamically render a custom web page in response!”
