There has been quite a stir created by the tech radar’s recent news article about Fitbit smartwatches: “RIP Fitbit smartwatches – an end we could see coming a mile away.”
Shortly after Google launched its new Google Pixel 3 true smartwatches, Tech Radar published this article. The article makes it clear that Google won’t continue with the Fitbit series, and anyone who has been following Tech Radar’s Fitbit coverage knows that they’re pretty sure about the end of Fitbit for a while.
While there has been no official statement from Google upon discontinuing Fitbit, Tech Radar ended the article by firmly stating, “Just like the Pebble before it, Fitbit watches are now consigned to wearable history. If you already have one at home, treasure it, because you won’t be getting another one”.
In response to the tech radar’s article, Ars Technica released a piece of much more credible news.
Ars Technica claims that a spokesperson for Google confirmed that the news about Fitbit leaving the market is not true.
Upon being contacted for comment, the spokesperson for Google informed Ars Technica and provided the following statement:
“We are very committed to Fitbit, and even more importantly to the customers that use and depend on those products and technology. It’s also worth noting that many of the health and fitness features we launched in the Pixel Watch 3 were because of Fitbit’s innovation and ground-breaking fitness advancements. In addition, we just launched Fitbit Ace LTE, [a smartwatch for kids released on June 5], and you’ll continue to see new products and innovation from Fitbit.”
It is encouraging Fitbit fans to be wary about the future because Google already has more than its fair share of dead products. It remains likely that in the future, this might happen due to the reduced customer support and care for Fitbit users. At this moment, Google isn’t announcing the end of any Fitbit product lines, so as of now, there’s nothing to worry about.
